In a recent disclosure, it was learned that some ₱1.74 trillion of the ₱4.5 trillion national budget for 2021 was still unspent as of 30 June.
MANILA — According to Albay Representative Jose Maria Salceda on Tuesday, “the unobligated is ₱1.742 [trillion] during sponsored debates on general principles and provisions of the proposed 2022 national budget.
The unused amount is ‘very worrisome,’ says Marikina City Representative Stella Luz Quimbo as the amount can be used for pandemic response as the economy gradually re-opens.
“I find this huge amount of unobligated funds very worrisome, considering that our economy is in a slump and Government spending is clearly one way to revive the economy,” say Ms Quimbo.
Unobligated funds have already been appropriated but not yet entered into a contract. Upon its expiration, they are reverted to the National Treasury.
President Rodrigo Duterte said “every centavo of this budget must be spent to ensure the nation’s recovery” when he signed the 2021 national budget in December 2020. (RA/The MiNT)
