Nintendo’s recent announcement of their upcoming Super Mario Bros movie stuns fans of the franchise as the released list of voice actors present a preference for star-studded talent—among which is the extremely unexpected casting of Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt as the title character, the beloved plumber Mario.
Netizens immediately took to social media as soon as Nintendo announced the voice cast of the 2022 Super Mario Bros movie. The announcement was made during this month’s Nintendo Direct (24 September 2021), which is an event that happens at least four times annually, where the upcoming content Nintendo has in store for its gamers is shown via a presentation.
Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, also known for Legend of Zelda and Star Fox, made a special appearance somewhere near the middle of the presentation, announcing a collaboration between Nintendo and animation studio Illumination, known for the Despicable Me movie franchise.
The internet went wild when they announced the voice actors, with Chris Pratt leading the pack. Pratt is accompanied by the likes of Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong). The original voice of Mario (and friends), Charles Martinet, will also have special roles in the movie—a move that thousands of netizens did not find fair.
While many were negatively judging the unexpected decision, others defended Pratt and crew, saying that it’s too early to judge. (RF/The MiNT)
