Labor leader presses for automatic voter registration

Do you favor automatic voter registration of individuals who turn 18?
As voter registration resumed last Monday, labor leader and Partido Lakas ng Masa presidential bet Leody de Guzman has pressed the Commission on Elections to adopt a system for the automatic registration of individuals who have reached 18 years of age.

MANILA — Just like in other countries, De Guzman said, the Comelec should develop a system of that will allow individuals who have turned 18 to be automatically registered.

“It should be automatic that upon reaching 18 years of age you become a voter. It should not be difficult to exercise your right,” De Guzman said in a statement.

He cited Israel, Chile, Argentina, and Hungary among countries where voter registratiion is automatic. People should not be burdened by bureaucratic proceduresas they exercise their constitutional rights.

“Although the extension of voter registration will help to include more voters in the 2022 elections, voter registration should not be required.” he said.

Workers who undertake the voter registration process should be provided paid leaves, De Guzman said, as the Comelec set registration only during working days.

Do you think this system of automatic registration will work for us? What benefits do you think it will give? What flaws should the system avoid, if ever? (RA/The MiNT)
