Food supplement, herbal medicine lessen Covid symptoms

Di you know that our scientists have found a possible complementary treatment that helps decrease the symptoms of mild COVID-19 cases?
As the pandemic extends, aside from the minimum safe protocols the health authorities provide to prevent contracting COVID-19, it is rare that medications reducing the actual symptoms of the virus are encountered or provided.
This time, that divide is finally crossed.

MANILA — Homegrown and locally available lagundi and tawa-tawa are the two herbs the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in their initial study, have proven to decrease symptoms of mild COVID-19 cases, according to undersecretary Rowena Guevarra during an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.

Usec Guevarra said, lagundi lessens mild COVID-19 symptoms, especially the loss of smell and it provides “overall relief from discomfort due to the symptoms”.

Meanwhile, the tawa tawa trial, given as a food supplement, came out with positive results.

“Of the 172 random COVID-19 positive respondents who took two tawa tawa 1950mg capsules three times a day for 10 days (have noticed that) their symptoms disappeared within three to five days,” said Guevarra.

Tawa tawa made mild symptoms as fevers, chills, body aces, and cough disappear she said.

One of the respondents experienced improvement in his general well-being after taking tawa-tawa extract. Another one had increased appetite, better bowel movement, and alleviated cough, Guevarra said in Filipino.

The DOST is now looking into the anti-viral effect of lagundi for mild and moderate COVID-19 cases with comorbidities.

More about the herbs

Lagundi (Vitex negundo) is a large native shrub that grows in Asia and Southeast Asia, and has been traditionally used as herbal medicine.

The medicinal uses of lagundi are for alleviating shortness of breath and wheezing, and lessening the frequency of cough, relieve asthma, facilitate the discharge of phlegm, and to lower fever due to colds or flu, according to DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development. It is also a pain reliever for headache and toothache.

Euphorbia hirta commonly known as tawa-tawa is a plant used in for the treatment of dengue.

Tawa-tawa promotes cell production, and prevents platelet destruction. Likewise, the improvement in the cell bleeding time and clotting time provide evidence that the indigenous plant can preserve and promote the hemostatic function of platelets, according to the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development.
