Facebook, Amazon keen on running new undersea cable

A new undersea cable between the Philippines and California are being eyed by Facebook and Amazon to operate.
With China Mobile out of the plan, the two tech giants intend to start commercial operation by late 2022 they told the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

WASHINGTON — In a joint filing, Facebook Inc and Amazon.com said the new cable will help to support both the companies applications and affiliate capacity in cloud services and data centers connectivity.

Restructuring “system ownership” by “allowing the parties to deliver on the goal of bringing connectivity to more people and regions” is “the best path forward,” says a Facebook spokeswomen of the project agreement between the two companies.

It may be recalled that the United States has expressed concerns abouth China’s handling of network traffic and potential for espionage when 300 subsea cables serve as the backbone of the internet. Ninety-nine percent of the world’s data traffic passes through them. (RA/The MiNT)
